This wonderful book tells the story of master engineer/producer Al Schmitt’s career, along with many of his thoughts about the art of making records, with a smattering of interesting photos to boot…. There is no mention of any modern software emulations of the devices described here, and one could argue that the pace of change in plug‑in world would have made any such references out of date almost instantly. Nor does Vintage FX claim to be an exhaustive survey.

Few universities in Latin America offered an audio engineering program, and the… Subtitled, “Beginner’s Archiving for Musicians”, this wonderful little ‘zine-like pamphlet presents some easy to understand concepts to help musicians (as well as engineers and producers)… It would have been easy to compile a book on this subject the lazy way, by paraphrasing material that’s widely available on the Web. This is a genuine labour of love, and will be essential reading for anyone with an interest in how music was produced back in the day. With everything you never knew you wanted… and you can rest assured that your vintage and rare wobbly sound device will turn up on time and in one piece and possibly in even better condition that when it left the workshop.

Each effect is well described, with multiple photos and a section on records it was used on. As much as I thought I knew about some of these effects, I learned quite a lot from this book! While many were familiar, some were new to me, and I grasped new insight about effects I own and have used for years. At under 300 pages and similar in size to an LP box set or a 10.5-inch roll of 1/4-inch tape, this book could sit well with your tape library at the studio, or in your record collection at home.

There have been several beautifully designed and written coffee table books published in the last few years that focus on music gear, including guitar pedals, modular synthesizers, microphones, and more. Yet, despite the increasingly crowded field, Matthias Fuchs has managed to find a niche and make it completely his own. Per the title, this book focuses on studio effects, from the early plate and spring reverbs and tape delays to the advent of the digital multi-effects processors and everything in between. I have a soft spot for many of these, in particular the first generation of digital effects as pioneered by companies like Eventide, Lexicon, Ursa Major, Quantec ProAudio, Publison, and many more.

Far more is included than not, but there are some omissions, and of course the line between ‘studio’ effects and those aimed at guitarists or keyboard players is a vague one at the best of times. The English text can also be a little indigestible in vintage fx places, with expressions rendered literally from the original German.
